OUGD405: Brief 4

Interim Crit:

The interim crit formed as a discussion in terms of whether the ideas were; appropriate, achievable, suited their purpose and suited their target audience. Overall when explaining my ideas to the group they seemed to think that the exhibition idea was the most interesting however in response I did ask why they thought so and if they felt it was relevant  to "keys". There didn't seem to be a definite answer so as a whole the two which seemed to create the best response were the lost keys and the exhibition idea. However after the crit I feel solving the problem of lost keys would be more appropriate due to my research. A few of the statistics I research included;
"7, 505 sets of keys found by London Transport last year"
and
"Insurance companies respond to over 500 lost key calls per day"
This shows the shocking about of keys that are lost on a regular basis. Therefore I feel that this would be most appropriate to my word: 'keys'

Problem: Many people lose their keys regularly and become unnecessarily stressed. Also a lack of knowledge in terms of what is available to help.
Answer: To inform people of the availability of App's which are incredibly helpful and reasonably inexpensive.
INFORM and EDUCATE the audience. (tone of voice)- Quite personal and therefore illustrative (not too intimidating and more friendly) rather than clean cut.
Create a poster and app to attract the audience.
Target audience: Young Adults -
Poster situated in public places such as train stations and bus stops- people commute to work and these tend to be highly stressful environments where ordinary objects such as keys are lost. Creating an App due to the advances in technology and the ease and availability to this target audience. A different type of product would be created if it was an older audience as they don't tend to use smartphones.

Apps which are useful:

Hipkey, Kensington Proximo Tag, Stick N Find Stickers, Cobra Tag, Tile, Zomm wireless leash, iFi smart tag, BiKN, Hone, Button Tracker & Tiny Finder.

Development of a poster: Informal, friendly fonts:

Sketches of phone (to represent app) and keys:

Initial drawings and sketches which were scanned in to create informal and friendly feel to the poster/ product.

Created background with paints and inks (textures are to represent the roughness of the ground/ cityscape where keys are usually) dropped and experimented with type and fonts I had initially looked at.

I experimented with using three different fonts however I found that this looks disorganised and not considered, therefore I will look into using one or two fonts.

This was a slight improvement by using two fonts instead of three however I think the alignment of the text needs to be changed.

I then changed the brown inky background I had created to a darker grey, this is because I felt it portrayed city more due to it being quite dark and coulee resemble the floor (pavements for example- similar tones).

To further enhance my idea and to fully solve the problem I looked into how apps are displayed:

The apps show the loading page/ logo and an example of page layout, they are usually quite simple and so I have incorporated white to make my body copy readable and have included an example of what one of the pages could look like (tile app page) if the app was to made fully it would contain quite a few examples which I have earlier discussed on how to solve the problem at different price ranges therefore suiting most people who use smartphones.

In context:

From having my work critiqued I found out that the typography they thought worked really well along with the illustrations however they thought that the colours seemed quite drained and that they could benefit from adding colour. I thought that by adding blue this cold and sharp colour would break up the dullness of the background.

Instead of changing all the typography which would of been an extreme change I added an outline of the blue colour as a "hard mix" which would be a sharp pigmented colour.

I realised that the QR code would not work when but into a different shape so I relocated it so it would technically function correctly.

FINAL POSTER

Overall I am quite pleased with my final outcome and the feedback I have been given as they have stated that it does solve the problem of lost keys. However I feel that the aesthetics could be better but it is made for its function rather than its form. The feedback I was given about changing part of the text to a colour works wonderfully and I am grateful for the advice. In terms of context I feel this poster would work best in public areas such as bus stops, train stations and possibly public toilets or nightclubs and people often lose their keys in these situations. I think my poster does fulfil my rewritten brief as it does communicate a message and solve a problem that I had identified and it also does portray the idea of chaos and stress due to the poster not being clean cut using vector designs.
