Evaluation
Throughout
this first module of level 5 I have found the briefs quite challenging. With
the first brief's I had a few issues settling back into the crits and
organising my work in a way that made me feel confident to present my ideas.
But since I have learnt to spend time organising my artwork and research so it
is easier to explain, this was even evident in the second brief, which was
based on kickstarted. I really enjoyed the challenge of the kickstarter brief
to be created in one singular week. I haven't completed a large amount of
branding or logo design before so this was quite different to what I am used to
but I would love to complete briefs like this again. This also gave a hint at
the beginning of the module for how my work could be seen commercially and it
is quite interesting to think outside of university especially when I gained
good feedback from the company themselves.
Brief 3 and
4 were connected to the summer brief and were connected to one of my closest
passions and hobbies outside of university. At first I found this quite
challenging to be objective about the design work as I was too self
involved. However engaging within crits and asking others for feedback on their
thoughts really helped me visualise what was necessary and what worked the
best. I found the web brief especially challenging because it is something
I have not done before, however I tried to keep the design incredibly
simple with the view to being able to try and code it using dreamweaver,
however it became apparent this wasn't necessary and therefore in retrospect
I'm disappointed I didn't have the time to be able to further research and
design something more elaborate. Even though there are a few problems with the
final coded file, which is ready for web use I am quite pleased of what I have
been able to produce in a short space of time. Especially when organising the
content and purpose of the website and illustrating the different areas, those
took a long time and therefore brought attention and time away from the final
product which I suppose could have been of far better quality with a
longer time frame.
I enjoyed
brief 4 as it allowed me to create artwork through the understanding of
commercial print in the workshops and also through research. Some of the more
elaborate printing techniques were not suitable for my project but they
are definitely worth while knowing for future briefs in and outside
of university. It was also interesting to research augmented design as although
this wasn't relevant for my own project in terms of the augmented reality
it is worth knowing for future projects such as magazine/editorial design for
example. I was extremely disappointed that I was unable to have the time
or budget to be able to produce physical versions of the 'pack' I wanted to
create for an equine event as this would have been an excellent way to create
an added feature to the website and bring it into reality. Due to the
brief running over the christmas break I didn't have full access to the
facilities or time to incorporate this for all the elements I mocked up.
Next time I will focus on creating only a couple of these elements and being
able to produce them to a higher quality. The digital printed poster, flyer and
business cards printed quite well in terms of their individual quality although
there were slight differences in colour when I placed them together. If I were
to produce these using a commercial printer they would all be consistent. The
last two briefs based on their content were heavily influenced by my own
opinions and interests outside of university and are also connected to the idea
of ethics and design for good. This is something I wanted to explore further
with different briefs especially within other modules as designing for
charitable causes appeal to me as it links to my own interests outside of
university. The main
point I have learned from this module is to think about my work as to how it
could work on a commercial scale using professional methods and not just one
off pieces in the studio which is something I need to reflect upon with every
piece of work.
