Thinking With Type (Ellen Lupton)
Through looking at the diagrams of the anatomy of type within the book it gave me a further insight into how fonts work and how they can be edited to give the font a particular personality or hold certain connotations/ and or represent a particular issue or brand.
From looking at the anatomy of type I began to work with a serif font and change it into a sans serif font (A). I achieved this by changing the shape and width of the bowl on the A, by removing the tail and adjusting the terminal so it was straight and therefore the letter looked in proportion.
I also manipulation the letter R pictured in the photograph above, the sans serif on the bottom left was the original and I changed the letter into two different styles of serif. One being a version of a modern slab serif, and the other being rather more traditional. I added tails to both of the letters, however on the slab serif version I made the width of the entire letter the same to create a bold modern letter. On the more traditional design I changed the shape of the leg by adding a curve, I also decreased the width of the cross bar and the general size of the letter to create an elegant shape.
