OUGD504: Print workshop (2)

Workshop

Preparing images in photoshop, working in photoshop. Previously looked at illustrator, in terms of cmyk & spot colours.

When preparing images for commercial print, ensure it is CMYK.

Gamut warning indicates which areas of the image are out of the cmyk range:

view > gamut warning

Changing the hue & saturation. Or can use "proof colours" as another possibility:

Adjustment layers would allow for certain areas to be edited:

Photoshop works best with RGB rather than CMYK because there are more options in filters/ adjustments.

Use the eyedropper tool to select colours and click on the swatches:

Where is states "new" and "current" the warning triangle indicates the colour is not suitable for printing, the symbol below shows the colour is not web safe.

Spot colours are useful for cutting down costs through using a limited colour palette. Spot colours can also be used for colours which are not part of cmyk, which includes metallics and brighter colours (similar to screen print).

Duo tones:

Curves in duo tones works similar to that of curves in adjustments.

added black:

Spot colour using channels:

Adding the text is white, colour is added by using black. Useful to look at this for commercial printing and also for screen printing. JPEG files cannot support spot colours.
