OUGD503: Brief 2 (collaboration) Topdeck

The main point we found within the brief was that Topdeck already have a website and a brochure but they want to bring this to a UK audience. We discussed that the target audience is young people so whatever we create it must include some form of digital aspect to engage people with technology as the majority of people have phones. We also decided together that the aesthetic of the brochure and website needs work on its constancy but instead of using the brochure as a main focus we could create a way for people to gain quicker access to the website. This was when we spoke about the idea of augmented design. In the previous module we briefly touched on this idea of being able to merge print and the digital technology together.

Individually we researched into what would be the best way to approach creating some form of brochure. I focused on the idea of including culture into a small leaflet which would give a taster of the trip, initially looking at Africa. I made a design board for inspiration based on some internet research I did for content and aesthetic. (see below)

Topdeck website & current brochure:

The website and brochure include a large amount of information on the Africa trip so therefore my first task would be to read through it and identify the important information to rewrite for myself in my own compact version of the brochure. I also found that the tone of voice within the website and brochure isn't consistent as it flutters between formal and expensive to trying to cater for students and those who quirky and fun graphics appeal to. With my own design I want to cater towards that target audience as something for students and young professionals as this is something I would enjoy to do as a trip.

Sara Midda's South of france: For my research into travel and Topdeck I looked at different travel based graphic design and artists books. One of which I know of is this sketchbook of the south of france. I love the informality of the format and the combination of sketches, scanned items and photographs.

The watercolour palette on the front of the book is continued to the back cover and throughout the sketchbook with different elements of these tones on the pages which match the theme of the sketches or photographs.

Colour swatches like the ones above would be perfect to put next to photographs or sketches of locations that would be visited.

Again these bright swatches of colour could be transformed to work with the different locations which are of interest to a UK audience for Topdeck.
