OUGD505: Brief 1- Campaigns based on Autism awareness

The images below are from a larger set of campaign posters which were created in Pakistan. They visualise some of the concerns connected to autism in a way that isn't shocking. The large amount of negative space plays upon the idea of isolation which works incredibly well within this campaign as it is proving a point and educating people about the myths of autism.

Again the images below are wonderfully moving and powerful advertising campaigns which visually show the idea of an autistic child isolating themselves further when they do not receive help. From what I have previously read within the TED talks speeches is that early diagnosis is extremely vital to a child's development socially.

Publication:

This was created by a design student as a way of tackling the problem of educating people about autism. Each section takes an 'issue/concern' or myth and then gives a little description with a visual queue. The guide is incredibly interesting and educational as it is easily read due to the design being incredibly simple.

The following info graphic and bag come as a pack to inform people about autism and the early signs of detection. From previously looking into possible outcomes for audience I think creating something for parents is something I want to focus on as the idea of promoting early detection and educating parents is actually something which is incredibly beneficial.

Similar to a pack they give out in Finland:

Contents:

'For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.'

Mattress, mattress cover, undersheet, duvet cover, blanket, sleeping bag/quilt
Box itself doubles as a crib
Snowsuit, hat, insluated mittens and booties
Light hooded suit and knitted overalls
Socks and mittens, knitted hat and balaclava
Bodysuits, romper suits and leggings in unisex colours and patterns
Hooded bath towel, nail scissors, hairbrush, toothbrush, bath thermometer, nappy cream, washcloth
Cloth nappy set and muslin squares
Picture book and teething toy

'It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life.
The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.
With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby's first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box's four cardboard walls.'

What I gained from researching into this is that by educating the parents of children on whatever development related issue this is it will have profoundly positive effects on the babies quality of life.

I have also found that from talking to others that pregnant women receive what is known as a 'bounty' pack in the UK.

http://www.bounty.com/about-bounty/bounty-packs/family-pack

The Bounty packs are bags of free samples and information for expectant and new mums, and provide you with the opportunity to 'try-before-you-buy', a range of samples for you, your baby and your family.

- They also include in the packs a whole different range of information:
The first is a "Bounty pregnancy information pack" and that is given to a lady when they know they are through the stages of pregnancy which includes a whole range of advice and tips.

Photos and information from the website:

The family pack would be the one which is most linked to my current research. I found that signs of behaviour connected to autism can be found in babies and young children. There are many fears about the vaccine MMR being associated with children developing autism but it is in fact only around the same age that the most obvious signs of behaviour are present and noticeable in a child's development.

An example of what is inside one of the packs:

These packs contain information for mothers and as I discussed before it would be ideal to create a publication of some kind to inform parents about diagnosis and signs of autism. There is no specific scientific research which says what the cause of autism is as it can be a combination of various different elements. But I feel the most important elements would be to concentrate on educating to then allow for early diagnosis and then therefore earlier treatment.

To move forward in the direction of being able to create something for parents I need to research into the design and reasoning for certain colours and typefaces as it would need to be something comforting and friendly too.
I will need to include information which relates to children so therefore I will research further into autism in babies and children.
