From a final crit about my penguin submission it was suggested that I think about screen printing my design. As I did not have enough time to complete this for the official penguin submission I chose to go ahead and still do the print for module submission. From my current study essay in context of practice I have found that I am enjoying working with screen printing and a more hands on approach. The options which are possible with screen print in terms of colour are extraordinary and this is something I wanted to work with. Even though on screen my design was bright and contrasts- when printed this is something which is a little more disappointing as of course print is usually CMYK and the colours are flat. Through working with screen print I was able to produce the colours I initially intended for the project- a bright vivid purple along with black and a semi- opaque white.
I also had lots of different problems with the flooding of the images due to the background being such a full colour (purple).
The first two colours were quite simplistic but it was the white (third colour) which was my main concern when screen printing. Colours are normally somewhat transparent so I had a few different options, I could either make the mixture of colour incredibly thick and risk the screen flooding, this would mean printing incredibly quickly or washing the screen and trying a wet look shiny white which would sit on top. However I opted to try for the standard white and risk flooding because I wanted all three colours to be the same texture (matte).
The screen print:
The difference between the digital print and the screen print is phenomenal in the pigmentation of its colour. This is evidence of a brief where different print methods definitely push an idea. This pigmentation of a book cover and the contrasts would definitely stand out on the shelf. If I had more time and access to other equipment I would of wanted to experiment with different versions of screen printing such as making it glow in the dark where the white colour is.
