OUGD406: Brief 3- Screen Printed Poster.

After watching the film and looking at important scenes and wrote down a few ideas:

Beginning sketches:

Idea 1:

I liked my initial drawing and composition of of the gun along with a small amount of text, it creates direct contact with the viewer and I think I will create a vector graphic of this image in black.

I create the vector on illustrator which perfectly illustrated what I wanted from my initial drawing. The use of black and direct eye contact really reminded me of the original war propaganda posters:

The direct contact within these posters work for their purpose of involving the audience which could work in a similar method for a film as the viewer may feel more involved and engaged with the content.

I started looking at fonts which somewhat looked like blood splats but I felt that this really didn't work due to the fact that it seemed quite obvious and therefore I would consider other font choices. However the use of red to connote action/ violence I feel is more subtle than actual blood splatted text and therefore works.

From influences of looking at older war posters I started looking at fonts which looked like they had been stamped on and were quite bold and masculine to match the target audience of the film.

I tried with a few different fonts before deciding on this one because it is quite bold and therefore striking with a textured feature which links to the influences I had looked at.

I received some feedback to put some red into the centre of the gun to match the text however I feel that this doesn't really work because it draws attention away from the text.

In terms of this as being a complete idea I feel as though the aesthetic of the font and imagery doesn't really work fully however I feel this idea could really work as a mono print or using other methods and colour choices which wouldn't be as sharp or harsh and would be more textured.

Idea 2: I found that there were very few movie posters which used text as the main focus and this therefore led to looking at an important quote within the film.

From previously considering the colour red I continued this colour choice but changed it to a darker red which I felt portrayed the idea of blood and violence much more clearly. However through experimenting with a large quote and the composition of the gun I found that it really didn't work and therefore I will try experimenting with this in "Die Hard 2" which  would be far smaller.

I began with experimenting with black and white to see if the composition works and I really liked the simplicity of the imagery and having the text as the main focus it also subtly links to the genre of the film rather than using high definition footage or photography.

I tried using the gun shape into all of the typography but felt the composition was quite cluttered and therefore didn't work at all. I used the font IMPACT because it is a bold sans serif font and due to the width of the letterforms appears quite masculine rather than curved, this is also the reason why I have chosen to put the text in uppercase rather than lowercase.

Through looking at the trailer I saw that blue type seemed to be used due to the fact that is winter and blue is considered a cold colour which I have also learnt through colour contrasts in Design Principles. I tried putting Bruce Willis into the the text however I felt that the composition of the type didn't really work and therefore put it above in white.

I finally was happy with this composition but I found that the contrast between the white and blue simply wasn't strong enough and after feedback from others this confirmed that I should change the coloured background back to a dark red which could be screen printed with two colours.

I'm quite happy with the simplicity of this as an alternative poster design however I don't feel as though it is strong enough to illustrate the film as a whole.

Idea 3: I chose to focus on one of the scenes in the film which also appears within the trailer which is the scene where Bruce Willis is trying to bring down the plan through signalling through the use of fire.

I began looking at using a silhouette vector graphic of Bruce Willis from the screen shot above and also created a small graphic of a plane, however the overall direction and perspective of the plane was completely wrong aesthetically.

I changed the shape of the plane and felt that this worked far better in terms of perspective because plane looks like it is going to land. I chose an orange colour because I saw that the explosions and fire within the film were orange/ yellow coloured and as we can only use two colours I have chosen orange however I think a bright orange and perhaps neon colour would work better because it created a high contrast.

I tried experimenting with black and orange within the type and changed the 2 to II because the 2 seemed too curved and I felt the more angular look worked better than the curve within the number 2.

Previously in my first Idea I looked at using textured fonts and therefore I tried to use these within this poster design however this doesn't work at all because it contrasts the clean cut lines of the vector image created.

I tried using the font American Captain (dafont) which is incredibly angular and therefore I felt that this suited its target audience of men as it is quite masculine and bold which is enhanced through the use of uppercase letterforms.

I experimented with the size of the letterforms and also the use of black/orange contrast however I feel that the text works best aesthetically in orange, however the composition on the image as a whole doesn't seem correct, I will try enlarge the size of the plane and move it slightly downward.

The overall composition of my idea I think works really well and overall I think it is quite strong as it contains some of the elements of the film.

After asking a couple of people their opinions on my work they said that the red and black combination has been seen too often and that the poster containing the plane is quite original and could really work as a screen printed poster through using neon colour. However I did receive some improvements which are that I could try changing the background to black as the scene is at night, this I feel was really influential feedback and when trying it I found that it really worked and that I wanted to continue this idea through to screen print.

Positives for screen print

Colours used:

First colour

Second colour:

I had quite a few problems with the alignment of my second colour because I haven't experienced two colour screen printing before with such accuracy which proved to be incredibly difficult. However after quite a few attempts and patience I eventually managed to produce the outcome which I tried onto two different papers, the first being a normal matte paper which was quite thin but then also a thicker paper which was slightly textured, which I felt worked best because the paper absorbed larger amounts of the ink and therefore the colour was much more saturated.

These are the designs which I will take to the crit.

Final Crit:

Overall the feedback was actually pretty positive in terms of my final design working as an alternative poster.

We like the orange, nice minimal design, like the lack of light, well done.
Black background is effective with orange type, I like the design you have screen printed the most- although could of experimented with other colours.
Nice design, not too sure on the typeface as the capital E looks odd with the diagonal terminals. But overall look is great, simple. not too sure on the orange colour choice- whats the relevance?
Really like the one you chose to screen print. Very different from what I have seen for Die Hard or action movies in general. Works well and suits the movie in an alternative way.
Strong final design- I like the neon orange against the black and white- the figure body stance is a bit difficult to decipher maybe don't cross his arms?
Nice use of colours- I prefer the type design though.
Film is clearly communicated, I prefer the original shade of orange though not really sure about the fluorescent orange. Overall a strong design, I like it.
I personally like the type design you did. straight to the point.
I think the one you have screen printed is best as it captures  Die Hard 2 specifically.
I really like your screen print works a lot better than digital.
Think the design you have chosen is most successful- unsure on the orange.
Not keen on the orange- try red. Like the type poster too.
I like the simplicity, vectors and very vibrant!
Really like the poster you can tell its for die hard 2.
Love the contrast of black and orange.
Could of used a different stock to add texture to the poster.
Could of spent longer on neatening up the vector of the man.

From looking at my feedback I feel overall my poster was quite successful in terms of portraying the film. However there seemed to be a few issues with my use of a vibrant orange, I wanted to try and explain that the film uses fire and this is an incredibly bright orange to improve visibility- therefore I felt a brighter orange was perfect. In terms of the vector of the man- within the scenes he does struggle to bring the plane down which is what I tried to portray however I can see how this perhaps wasn't clear enough, I could have made the figure central and his arms outward instead of crossing.

I have recently received an email from AMP though:
