OUGD503: Responsive- "Tackling briefs"

We were introduced to an older YCN brief from last year which was based on Yahoo!

We first began looking at the ideas of why Yahoo! is struggling as a brand and it is simply because it is constantly being compared to google. One of it's main downfalls is that the home page is too cluttered and it makes it feel quite overwhelming to the viewer as to where to look first. The brief asks for something to be designed to suit 13-18 year olds and you have to bear in mind what the audience needs are and that would be to quickly search or access their own accounts and information without the hassle of scrolling and looking through to find information.

As you can see on the image above the website has a vast amount of information and the icons on the left hand side amount to:

So therefore due to the long list we thought about how we could break them down into smaller sections and we decided upon six icons being; mail, news, search, entertainment, shopping and film. These section would include parts of the others but we felt it was important to simplify the amount on the home page. We also began looking at how the website could function by drawing thumbnails of ideas.

After experimenting with some different layouts and ideas for icons we decided upon vector graphics for the icons to keep them simplistic and easy to understand with the lack of text. We also thought about how this would work on a mobile as well as a laptop/desktop. We also changed the purple from the Yahoo! webpage to something which is much more subtle and easier on the eye to view.

The entire purpose and aims of our ideas in this one day workshop was to create an interface which would be simple and easier to use which would therefore make viewing the website a much more enjoyable experience for the younger audience as the icons include subject matters which are important to them.
