I am quite pleased with the end result of this brief visually as I think it does communicate my design process along with the style of design I enjoy making along with influences I love from other sources such as history. I have definitely learned within this brief that crits are incredibly important and I feel as though after the crit we had in small groups I went into a completely different direction but in the end created a result which was more reflective of myself. By looking back I realised that I simply spent too much time on trying to create something which was near a final stage for the critique and made myself quite stressed when this was not necessary. I was disappointed in my time keeping because I think even though we only had a week I could of screen printed or had time to experiment with other forms of type such as hand rendered or letterpress techniques which is something I am yet to try. I also felt as though with the limited time scale I didn't allow myself to think of a vast range of design solutions and perhaps suffered a little from not being able to develop my ideas as far as I had hoped.
Within my final piece I used off white paper stock which firstly appears quite "yellow" in comparison to white stock however I think this really adds to the whole aesthetic that I had looked at in relation to history and medieval books. I am quite happy with my choice of stock because it worked incredibly well with the tea stain paper I scanned in on the computer and I had received positive comments from others in the group on the quality of the stock and also on the background as they said it didn't actually look digitally printed but in fact did show historical influences which I think was enhanced by the rough looking rope I used to tie the leaflet together.
The concertina fold I used was to represent the idea of a story and that the process folded out as one long line of separate pages because I see the process as one but with different elements. However I felt it was quite simplistic compared to other types of folding techniques I had looked at but with the time restrictions and the amount of negative feedback I received in the crit I felt it was vitally important to concentrate more on the aesthetic as I find crafting paper and complex folds quite difficult, perhaps because this is a project I have not done before. But in future briefs or even if I come back to this brief I will definitely look into using a different type of fold and try to push myself to experiment more which unfortunately is something I regret.
I think the font I used suits the inspirations I looked at in terms of the concept of my design but perhaps to some people this would be quite difficult to read as I am used to old english and older books. If this design was to be made on a commercial level or even if I had the time to make adjustments I would definitely look into using a more legible type that still suited my intentions. Because this is a double sided print only on A3 paper this could be easily reproduced digitally on different stock but in terms of my intentions I think this personally would work better by using screen printing methods which would take much longer as a process but in the end seem more real and crafted. If I were to make other improvements to this it would definitely to make the leaflet larger by having the time to source suitable stock that was bigger than A3 as I struggled to find off white stock in this size with the thicker weight I wanted. By making the pages bigger this would allow me to add descriptions on the other side of the concertina leaflet to give more information than what is already shown.
