OUGD504: Brief 1

Through looking at all the different elements from the spider diagram and flow chart I have edited the descriptions to create 8 sections of the design process which I think all contribute. I personally don't think I spend more time on research than design or vice versa. The eight sections are:

Initial Ideas
Broad Research
Specific Research
Design Decisions
Experiment
Development
Critique Feedback
Final Outcome

I have begun looking into different ways of folding leaflets to fit eight sections:

Simple concertina fold with eight pages-

This would contain the information well and allow for plenty of space to experiment with composition however I feel as though it is too simple to become a leaflet which shows the design process.

I also tried a leaflet folding idea I found in a book:

I quite like the idea that the leaflet could fold out completely to show a full page, I have eight pieces of information to show so therefore I thought about using an octagon shape to show all eight parts of the process.

I quite like this idea and think it could work better on A3 than A4. This then led onto another idea I had which would be to create a box shape that could then in turn flip out to create a fully folded out shape.

I began making a net from looking at my research and the invitation/ envelope idea:

I split the middle into triangles to match the outsides however it doesn't look completely balanced so therefore I will try it as squares.

Which I think as a composition works much better.

I found that with working with a thinner stock and a thicker stock the paper still seemed to make its way back upwards and not stay down pressed onto the paper. I spoke to a few other people about my concerns and which ideas they think I should go with and they agreed with me. However they stated that I could think about using ribbon or string to use to allow the piece to be opened. I think this could work really well as it makes the piece delicate which would match the style of graphic design I like, I enjoy using feminine fonts and having quite a delicate aesthetic which is quite informal.

However I think if I had more time there is another sketch I did which would of been wonderful to work with. I am quite well organised and feel more comfortable with briefs if I plan out all of my time rather than waiting for inspiration therefore the idea of a miniature file with different coloured stock for each section would work well:

This design has the possibility of being screen printed to create bright colours or by using coloured stock. I tend to colour my notes which enables me to remember vital information more easily especially when I have written large amounts of notes.

However due to the time frame and limitations with experimentation I am going to take forward the leaflet that folds in.
